Alpha Theta Beta Sorority proudly supports Safe Center Long Island and Make a Wish Foundation. Safe Center Long Island's mission is "to protect, assist and empower victims of family violence and sexual assault while challenging and changing social systems that tolerate and perpetuate abuse." We support them by attending events, such as the Domestic Abuse Awareness Ceremony and a Consent Discussion. The Make a Wish Foundation's mission is "to serve a unique, and vital, role in helping strengthen and empower children battling critical illnesses." We support the organization by hosting our Monte Carlo event and Flag Football Event, as well as attending their Polar Plunge.
We also support various other philanthropic events hosted by other nonprofits, as well as Hofstra University organizations; this includes Relay for Life, Dance Marathon, Suicide Prevention Walk, Clothing Drive, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk, and many others.
Our Philanthropy Chair
My name is Tori and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am the philanthropy chair for Alpha Theta Beta this semester and I am here to talk about, you guessed it, our philanthropies. One of my first events I participated in once I joined AOB was called Baking for First Responders. The sisters along with the fraternity Phi Kappa Theta spent a Saturday afternoon baking brownies, cookies, and muffins for our local fire departments, police departments, and even Public Safety. Ideally, I was not sure if this was how I would want to spend my Saturday afternoon; however, those hours went by really quickly, I made some new friends, and ate some broken cookies with sisters. By the end of the event, I forgot this was a philanthropy event at all between all the fun we were having and the smiles on the first responder’s faces. This is why we are so passionate about philanthropy. Throughout our years together, we work very closely with our two philanthropies which are The Make a Wish Foundation which supports research and care for children suffering with cancer and The Safe Center of Long Island which gives victims of family violence and sexual assault a support system and the resources they need.
All year round, we strive to donate our time and energy as a sisterhood to these organizations and to philanthropy as a whole. On top of hosting our own events such as flag football tournaments and our own rendition of Dancing with the Stars, we often find ourselves out in the community and with Hofstra trying to leave the world better than when we found it in events like Shake-a-Rake, suicide prevention walks, social media campaigns such as The Semi-Colon Project, and various other events.
To us, philanthropy does not just mean helping others and working with good causes, it also means getting to spend time with sisters in a positive and beneficial way. Some of my favorite memories as a sister of Alpha Theta Beta include singing along to throwbacks at Relay for Life, cheering on the fraternities at our flag football tournament, and bonding over Ma. Jhosa, a child we support each semester who lives in the Philippines. Knowing that we are making a difference in our community while creating memories that will last a lifetime makes our time worthwhile. To AOB, philanthropy is much more than just a requirement as a sorority, but it is our way of strengthening our bond as a sisterhood by making a beneficial impact on the world around us.
